Category C1 (7½ Tonne)

Category C1 (7.5 Tonne)

If you passed your driving test after 1st January 1997 you have to take a separate test to be able to drive a lorry with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of 7.5 Tonnes.

The test vehicle requirements are as follows:

  1. MAM 3.5 – 7.5 Tonnes.
  2. Minimum 5 metres in length.
  3. A boxed lorry.
  4. ABS.
  5. A Tachograph.

The procedure to obtain the Category C1 Licence is as follows:

  1. You must be at least 18 years of age
  2. Have a medical from a local doctor who will complete Form D4 (cost about £30.00).
  3. Send off Form D4 together with Form D2 to DVLA to get provisional entitlement to learn how to drive a 7.5 Tonne lorry (Free of charge).
  4. Apply for LGV theory test – (cost £50.00).
    The Theory Test comprises of multiple choice questions and answers. The pass mark for this is 85 out of 100. You will also sit a hazard perception test and the pass mark for this 67 out of 100.
  5. Attend a training course and take the practical test at the end of it. The training course comprises of 4 days training on a 1 to 1 ratio starting at 9am and finishing at about 2pm. The test will be on day 5. If possible the training should run on consecutive days. (The cost of this course inclusive of the practical test fee is £750.00).

The Practical Test comprises of:

  1. Answering 5 simple questions on basic vehicle checks.
  2. Reversing in to a marked bay.
  3. Carrying out a controlled stop.
  4. Driving on urban, rural and motorway roads for approximately 60 minutes.
