Compulsory Basic Training is something all learner motorcyclists and moped riders must do before you're allowed on the public roads. We will provide this course on an off road site with fully qualified instructors.
You'll be provided with fully insured motorcycles for the day with all the required safety equipment. The course itself takes place over one day, the length of which is dependant on your individual ability, usually between 6-8 hours. The following is an outline of the course structure.
Section One - Introduction (about 30 minutes)
- Eyesight test (must be passed in order for the course to continue)

Section Two - Practical on site training (about 45 mins)
- Control positions overview
- Foot controls
- Left handlebar controls
- Right handlebar controls
- Instrument panel
- Basic machine checks including side and centre stands, wheeling, braking, starting and stopping the engine
Section Three - Practical on site riding (about 2 - 3 hours)
- Riding including clutch control and gear changing
- Braking
- Indicating and manoeuvring including rear observation, lifesaver shoulder checks and the OSM/PSL routines
- Moving off, stopping, turning left and right, junctions and u-turns
Section Four - Practical on road training (about 45 minutes)

Section Five - Practical on road riding (about 2 hours)
- Put into practise everything in sections 1 - 4 for at least 2 hours
- Demonstrate competence and safety in range of road and traffic conditions
- Training to include coping with a range of hazards including as many of the following as possible
- Traffic lights, roundabouts, junctions, pedestrian crossings, gradients, bends and obstructions
Repeat the following exercises (originally practiced during Section 3)
- Manoeuvre satisfactorily
- Carry out the U-turn correctly
- Bring the machine to a stop under full control as in an emergency
On satisfactory completion of all the sections, you'll be given a certificate that's valid for two years which validates the provisional license. Both need to be produced on your first motorcycle test.
