Driving Instructor Training Information

How Does The Course Work?

We pride ourselves on training you to the highest level, to ensure that you are not able to just pass the test, but to learn the business skills you need to make a success of your new career.

In order to train you must:

• Have held a full UK licence for at least 3 years
• Have not been banned from driving in the last 4 years
• Have no more than 6 points on your licence
• Be a ‘fit and proper’ person (in the opinion of the DVSA)
• Pass a DBS (Enhanced Level Disclosure and Barring Service) check - Formally known as a CRB Check.

The training course has 3 parts and you need to pass 3 tests in order to become a fully qualified and Approved Driving Instructor.

Part 1 – ADI Theory Test

This test is made up of 2 parts: Multiple Choice Questions and Hazard Perception. You will need to pass both parts of the test in order to progress on the course.

You will allocated 2 hours of 1-to-1 training and provided with all of the relevant revision materials for this part of the course.

Part 2 – ADI Driving Test

This test is essentially an advanced driving test. The set up is similar to the current driving test for learners, however the test is longer and more thorough. Your course instructor will allocate at least 10 hours of 1-to-1 in-car training for this aspect of the course.

Part 3 – ADI Instructional Ability Test

This is the final hurdle in becoming a driving instructor! The exam consists of 2 half hour driving lessons on subjects chosen by your examiner. It is set out as a role-play scenario, whereby your examiner will play the role of a learner driver and assess your ability to teach them. You will receive 40 hours of in-car training to help you pass this test. Each session is planned with lesson aims and constructive feedback, so you should be more than confident by the time your test comes round!

Upon completing the test you will be given a grade by the examiner.

Grade 4 (adequate), 5 (good) or 6 (excellent). Anything lower than a grade 4 is a fail, and you will be required to retake the test.

(Fortunately we have a fantastic first time pass rate!)
