Instructor Training Course Information

In order to train you must:

• Have held a full UK licence for at least 3 years
• Have not been banned from driving in the last 4 years
• Have no more than 6 points on your licence
• Be a ‘fit and proper’ person (in the opinion of the DVSA)
• Pass a DBS (Enhanced Level Disclosure and Barring Service) check - Formally known as a CRB Check.

The training course has 3 parts and you need to pass 3 tests in order to become a fully qualified and Approved Driving Instructor.

Part 1 – ADI Theory Test

This test is made up of 2 parts: Multiple Choice Questions and Hazard Perception.

Part 2 – ADI Driving Test

This test is essentially an advanced driving test. The set up is similar to the current driving test for learners, however the test is longer and more thorough.

Part 3 – ADI Instructional Ability Test

This is the final hurdle in becoming a driving instructor! The exam consists of 2 half hour driving lessons on subjects chosen by your examiner. It is set out as a role-play scenario, whereby your examiner will play the role of a learner driver and assess your ability to teach them.
